[T]he bicycle will accomplish more for women's sensible dress than all the reform movements that have ever been waged. ~Author Unknown, from Demerarest's Family Magazine, 1895
Hi guys! This year I'll be putting up fewer shots, but hopefully improving the quality at the same time. Sort of a 'best of' if you like. This community is terrific in so many ways - I love it even if I don't often comment. The people on here make it a great place to be. I'm also writing a health-related blog - if you're interested, hop on over to http://healthskills.wordpress.com/ and make yourself known!

@Zach Siebert: Thank you, I have to admit that I'm not riding my bicycle as much as I should...I reckon you can't carry photographic gear safely on the bike (great rationalisation, huh?!)
Reminds me of my bike, bought for all that money almost 2 years ago, rode only 5 or 6 times, my poor neglected bike :)
Good capture

@Suby: I know what you mean... I know it's environmentally friendly, and I don't live far from work - but I can't bring myself to actually get on the thing...
A fine subject for the photography!

@Ee Yuing: Thank you!
I like the architecture in the back! I'd like to see a shot where there's more light on the bikes themselves.

@Evelyn: High contrast in the very bright sunlight meant they were almost silhouettes. I didn't actually take another shot where they were more illuminated. The architecture is the old University of Canterbury campus in Christchurch. it was built in the 1880's in a style strongly reminiscent of 'gothic', but was abandoned in 1974 when the university outgrew it. Subsequently the Council bought the property and it has been used as the city's Art's Centre, and houses artists and artisans, bakers, a fudge-maker, several restaurants, dance company, theatre, cinema, and some apartments. What a wonderful place to live if you can!! It's a real hive of activity all the time but particularly during the weekends when it's full of tourists and residents alike coming to the weekend market. A great place for photo opportunities and a favourite haunt of mine - of course it's also a great place to sit and sip a beer or two!
My three bicycles are my closest friends (Canberra is the ONE place in Australia where it's normal transport). Any photos of bikes grab my attention. But what grabs me here is that huge white thingie between the arches. It looks like a giant white rabbit! What is it?

@Sidonie: It's the pillar!!! Bikes are loved in Christchurch as well, it's FLAT! and reasonably cycle friendly, though cccccccooooolllllldddd in winter...
Cool composition Bronnie :) and thanks telling us that history :)

@H.O: Thanks for the compliment. And yes, I do think cycles helped women feel OK about wearing the pants in any relationship!
