Pohutukawa - Kiwi Christmas Tree

There are several myths about the pohutukawa, one I particularly like is that the earlier the pohutukawa flowers, the longer and hotter the summer. Unfortunately, these flowered late - and our summer hasn't really arrived! They are beautiful trees, found along the coastline all throughout New Zealand, very hardy once established.

Hi guys!
This year I'll be putting up fewer shots, but hopefully improving the quality at the same time. Sort of a 'best of' if you like.
This community is terrific in so many ways - I love it even if I don't often comment. The people on here make it a great place to be.

That was the first Maori word I learnt when I visited NZ back in the 70s - everyone pointed to the flowers and hoped I would pick up the pronunciation. Beautiful delicate crisp photo.

@Sidonie: Did you get it in the end?!! I grew up in Gisborne, which is a predominantly Maori part of the east coast of North Island - if we didn't get the vowels right, we would get harassed no end!! I think they look like stars or a fireworks explosion in this picture.

@Kaushal: They are fantastic trees - quite often mangled into these twisted and contorted shapes, but just hanging on... Sad to say I don't have any pix of them like that (they're sort of common-place to me - a bit picture postcard even!), but now you've sent me on a mission!

@Bahar: Thank you! Me too, I love the red, it's a soft red and the bits on the end of the stamen always look like little explosions!

I travelled around NZ a few years ago. We absolutely loved it. One thing that impressed me the most was the colour of the flora. great memories.
