Not blue but grey. Not Norwegian, but New Zealand. In tribute to Monty Python...
Hi guys! This year I'll be putting up fewer shots, but hopefully improving the quality at the same time. Sort of a 'best of' if you like. This community is terrific in so many ways - I love it even if I don't often comment. The people on here make it a great place to be. I'm also writing a health-related blog - if you're interested, hop on over to http://healthskills.wordpress.com/ and make yourself known!

Nice image. Did you crop this.

@CT Photography: Yes, there was quite a lot of 'waste' water above it, and I trimmed the side (left). Wish I'd got closer so I could have missed the rock just in front of the bird!
quelle grâce dans le plumage!

Great Photo! I love the fact the subject althought it is almost the same color as the background, is detatch from it because of the DOF. Great control!

Beautiful detailed shot! Lovely bird. That's what I think - but a lot of people around here would cheerfully shoot them - the herons go around stealing the goldfish etc. out of peoples' ornamental ponds!

@Anne: I never knew that! They spend a lot of time catching herrings or other wee fish in the shallows, and in Kaikoura there are not too many ponds! it's quite a tiny village really.
Lovely shot there mate. Love the colour of this bird and the DoF is great

@Jason Kravitz: That's what I fell in love with - and I'm rapt I managed to get it so clear!
Oh my God, that is beautiful!

Stunning shot. The clarity is beautiful.

What hasn't been said? Great shot of beautiful subject.
19 Feb 2007 5:40pm
Beautiful shot. Might have been a possibility to bump the exposure down to 1/400 allowing you to get your F-stop up to 6.3 or 7.1, and thus get the bird's head and eye in better focus. Still a fabulous image ... I like it.

@Aaron Schmidt: Cool idea, so far I have never touched those controls on the camera!! You can tell I'm still a newbie on DSLR. Must get the manual out...
Stunning! Absolutely stunning.

@jennifer radio: Thank you so much.
DOF is great. How close were you to this bird?
19 Feb 2007 10:14pm
@Michael Zhang: I think from memory I was about 200m or maybe slightly more away from it... On another shot I was a lot closer, perhaps 80m or so, but I can't remember which one this was.
wow! this is really so beautiful!
