I love the frills that adorned buildings in the early 1900's. Today's buildings are so terribly functional, all glass and straight lines. This was taken from Hanafin's photographic store looking across Hereford Street towards the BNZ.
Hi guys! This year I'll be putting up fewer shots, but hopefully improving the quality at the same time. Sort of a 'best of' if you like. This community is terrific in so many ways - I love it even if I don't often comment. The people on here make it a great place to be. I'm also writing a health-related blog - if you're interested, hop on over to http://healthskills.wordpress.com/ and make yourself known!

@Still: Thank you, it's not my usual style (apart from the blue, which I love, my favourite colour!)
Nice design patterns, can be called "modern art"

@Behrooz: Looking forward to it!
Don't you just love old architecture? So much more character and depth! Wonderful shot Bronnie!

@Jen: Thanks Jen - yes we seem to have a plethora of glass and steel buildings and I'm sure they won't be around in another 20 years!
I know what you mean, old buildings are often adorned with such fine features, well seen and the juxtaposition of the old and new reinforces the formers beauty. nice.

@Duncan Galbraith: Thanks Duncan!
Nice details on this one, old and new.

They certainly don't build them like they used to! Some of the older buildings that we have here have adornments, metal, concrete, stonework, that I suspect could not even be done anymore today.

I agree with you, so much care and craft was created in the past. Well spotted, and thanks for sharing it with us.

The ironwork looks like a Scottish thistle motif - in Christchurch that is probably to be expected! You've spotted the juxtapositions of curves and verticals and horizontals at just the right spot - nice work!

@Sidonie: Thanks! Yes, it could be the Scottish heritage, although Dunedin is the 'Edinburgh of the South', while we're supposed to be more English than the English - don't know about that myself!!
