te kouka

The cabbage tree is called this because apparently early European settlers in New Zealand used to eat the new growing tips. To the Maori people, te kouka was both an important food source, but even more importantly, a navigational aid. They planted te kouka along routes across the South Island of Aotearoa, and used to follow the plantings each year.
